There are sequences that seem convoluted and confusing, the most prominent one being the connection between two wives on account of a husband’s infidelity. With Jon Hamm and David Harbour as the supporting cast, it’s almost a perfect cast.

Don Cheadle puts in a sincere performance and gets full support from Del Toro, his partner in crime. It’s refreshing to see Don Cheadle and Benicio Del Toro in roles that suit them perfectly. The film actually deals with the theme of technology at a time when the US auto industry was taking giant strides, but in its garb, we get to see a story that is all about crime and double-crosses. The icing on the cake in terms of its brilliant star cast is revealed at the end with a special appearance by Matt Damon. The film’s plot incorporates many double-dealings and double-crossings in its narrative, which keeps you glued to your seat. Look for the music by David Holmes when the beginning credits roll – you will later search for it. The period in which this film is set adds to the appeal of the film, and the excellent cinematography by Peter Andrews (actually a pseudonym of Steven Soderbergh) only enhances it further. What follows next is chaos and a setup after Goynes kills Charley. The recruiter sends these criminals to the house of his accountant, Matt Wertz (David Harbour) to hold the family hostage while ensuring Hertz is sent on an errand. The film begins when three criminals – Curt Goynes (Don Cheadle), Ronald Russo (Benicio Del Toro) and Charley (Kieren Culkin) are hired by Doug Jones (Brendan Fraser) to threaten a family, with blackmail being the larger motive. The setting of this film is Detroit of the 50s when America was still struggling with the menace of mafia and racism and the automotive industry was picking up momentum. ‘No Sudden Move’ is a caper film with a twist in which we see characters fully abiding by the adage ‘Desperate times call for desperate measures'.

The crime caper genre is familiar turf for the filmmaker and though this film may not be at par with the best crime capers, it surely entertains and keeps you engrossed. Review: Steven Soderbergh, the director of the cult Ocean trilogy may not have been in his elements in the past few years, but through ‘No Sudden Move’ one is able to spot those sparks that made him a force to reckon with in the 90s and the beginning of the millennium.
